Pregnancy kills over 500,000 women a year

More than half a million women still die every year in pregnancy or after childbirth in spite of two decades of efforts to bring down the toll, reports revealed on Friday.

Little has changed, particularly in much of the developing world. Women die of avoidable complications such as high blood pressure or haemorrhage in childbirth - and often the baby dies too or does not survive the next few years without a mother. Tens of thousands die painfully in backstreet abortions in countries where contraception is not readily available and abortion is heavily restricted or banned.

Papers prepared for a major conference in London next week and published in the Lancet on Friday reveal the scale of the failure. New figures show it is highly unlikely that the Millennium Development Goal 5 - to slash death rates by 75 percent from their 1990 level by 2015 - will be achieved.

In 1990 it was estimated that 576,300 women died in pregnancy, labor or after giving birth. The latest calculations, from the Harvard Centre for Population and Development Studies in Cambridge, Massachusetts, show that 15 years later, in 2005, some 535,900 died. The maternal mortality ratio dropped from 425 in 100,000 to 402 in 100,000.

But that, says Ken Hill, lead author of the paper, is a best estimate. Because of the lack of data from some of the countries with the worst death tolls, calculations have to be based on better performing countries that do collect figures. That makes it look as though there has been a drop of 2.5 percent in the mortality rate a year but it could be as low as 0.4 percent.

"0.4 percent unfortunately I think is the more realistic figure for the globe as a whole," said Professor Hill. "The proportion of sub-Saharan African births is going up and maternal mortality is not going down."

Abortion rates have dropped, mostly due to a big rise in contraceptive use in Eastern Europe. Globally numbers came down from 46 million in 1995 to about 42 million in 2003. But the picture in Africa and parts of Asia remains dire and some experts accuse the Bush administration of worsening the problem due to its anti-contraception, pro-abstinence policies there.

"There couldn't be a better set of findings to show the failure of the Bush administration policy - the emphasis on abstinence and monogamy, the obsession with abortion, the defunding of good family planning organizations because they talk about abortion," said Sharon Camp, president and CEO of the Guttmacher Institute, which carried out the abortion study with the World Health Organization.

Furore over funeral parlour's final resting place

URA proposals to build a funeral parlour in Sin Ming have met with the objections of residents despite its assurances that the facilities will be quiet and discreet

FUNERAL parlours in Hong Kong and Japan look just like modern office buildings, complete with lift lobbies.

But inside, they are kitted out with dining areas and large halls for wakes.

Often sited within mixed residential and industrial areas, they are what the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) here is looking to copy in the possible funeral parlour in Sin Ming, slated for the empty plot next to the Bright Hill Temple.

On Friday, the URA released details for the parlour, assuring the residents of Sin Ming that it will be a quiet, discreet and dignified place that will not advertise the business of death so near to their homes.

The URA stressed that no decision had been made on where the parlour will be as a study is still ongoing. It said it wanted residents' feedback.

Asked about alternative sites for the parlour - such as Mandai, already home to a crematorium and columbarium - the URA returned to its point that site details had not been finalised.

Its spokesman said: 'We are looking at details on the siting of such parlours, the timing for implementation, the mitigating measures that would be needed in place to minimise disturbance to the surroundings.'

When The Straits Times asked via e-mail why Sin Ming was being considered despite the area's lack of an MRT station, the URA replied that it was accessible by public and private transport.

It also said a future industrial development would shield the parlour from nearby homes and access to it would route traffic away from residential areas. Rules would be set up on the design and operation of the parlour.

The URA spokesman said that Yishun, another proposed site, had been tendered out, but there were no takers. The feedback it received suggested that it was not centrally located.

The proposed Sin Ming site is near a school, HDB blocks, private condominiums and terrace houses.

Residents told Transport Minister Raymond Lim last Sunday that they did not like the parlour being near their homes because of the taboos surrounding death.

Other residents The Straits Times interviewed on Wednesday expressed concern about the noise from funeral processions, the chanting, incense fumes and traffic jams. These things would depress their property value, others said.-By Alina Ashad

Fun Phrase !

You might like it. This is hilarious... ..even an Englishman could not construct sentences using numeric, which is exclusive only to Malaysians and Singaporeans.

Ah Lek was asked to make a sentence using 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Not only did he do it 1 to 10, he did it again from 10 back to 1. This is what he came up with.....

1 day I go 2 climb a 3 outside a house to peep. But the couple saw me, so I panic and 4 down. The man rushed out and wanted to 5 with me.. I ran until I fell 6 and threw up. So I go into 7 -eleven and grabbed some 8 to throw at him. Then I took a 9 and try to stab at him. 10 God he run away.

10 I put the 9 back and pay for the 8 and left 7-eleven. Next day I called my boss and told him I was 6 . He said 5 , tomorrow also no need to come back 4 work. He also asked me to go climb a 3 and jump down. I don't understand. I am so nice 2 him but I don't know what he 1.

Fu Dogs

This spectacular pair of immaculate bronze Fu Dogs are specially made for those who adore perfection. The male has a globe under his paws while the female has a child under her paws. This pair of dogs are smiley and are extremely obedient creatures to their owners. This ancient guardians have been used as potent protectors in imperial palaces, homes of high officials and rich merchants. In modern times, they are invited into homes to protect against theft and robbery, to help out working people who are not at home most of the time. Today, even office desks in cubicle set-up are being decorated with this kind of Fu Dogs to "woof" away thiefs and people of bad intention.
What Fu Dogs symbolize and how to place this object? The name Fu Dogs are actually derived chinese "foh" (recited in chinese as Buddha) because these beings are found as stone mounting guardians at Buddhist temples.

They are considered sacred in Buddhism, where most deities are depicted sitting on it. It is the emblem of wisdom, power and protection, which could be the reason why they are being embroidered on ancient chinese official robes.

These powerful guardians are fun to own like a lovely pair of real dogs at our homes and are easy to tame.
This powerful symbol provides potent protection and demon scaring for ancient palaces, banks, mansions, shops, malls, businesses, hotels and jewellery shops. Their faces may look like lions, but take note that they are different from the actual lions.

The male is usually depicted holding a ball to signify important global network for business people outside and external protection, while the female holding a child signifies protection of members of the household or premise. The male is placed on the left (from inside looking out of your premise) and the female holding a child is placed on the right (from inside looking out of your premise).

Ancient legend revealed that the Fu Dogs produce milk from their paws and enjoyed sporting with hollow balls. Therefore, ancient people place hollow balls in the jungle in hope of them leaving some milk onto the hollow balls. This is the reason why many chinese artpieces would show two Fu Dogs playing with the hollow balls. And these two Fu Dogs actually have the same significance as the two supreme Dragons playing with the pearl.

The Fu Dogs are popularly known as defender of law and protector of buildings. The Fu Dogs provide ultimate protection, wards of evil spirits and harmful people, nourishes chi that enters homes, bring in happy blessings and dissolves bad chi from neighbourly formations when placed in front of your main door at either sides or raised high up on both sides of your main gate.

Place a pair of the Fu Dogs at the door front on either sides if the door is facing the lift, stairs or escalator to dissolve rushing bad chi. They can be placed on floor level or raised to higher level.


Protect Your Energies

When you start to raise your energy vibration, you tend to become more sensitive to negative energies around you, and can often find yourself taking on the negative energies of others or of situations around you.

Have you ever felt really up, and positive, full of confidence and off to conquer the world? And then you come into contact with someone who is miserable, down on themselves and just about dragging themselves through every minute.

Have you noticed that it often does not take long before you also feel down and low, and your optimism has evaporated?

As we work more and more with energies, it is vital that we learn to protect our positive energies. There are some very simple techniques you can use to protect yourself and your loved ones. Most involve visualization and some involve the use of crystals, colour and light.

1. Angels or Universe as protectors-
You can call on your angels to protect to in any circumstances or to protect your property. I always use this when I leave my car or am away on holiday. I imagine the angels as policemen with big truncheons and rottweilers guarding my property

2. WHITE LIGHT-
imagine yourself wrapped in a big bubble of WHITE LIGHT. Imagine it is all round you, including around your feet and head and see it stretching about 3-4 feet (1- 1.5m) metres beyond yourself.

A variation on this is to imagine a cross of white light. Draw it with your hands- from top to bottom and left to right and then circle your hands around yourself like a spiral or vortex.

You can then green all round yourself for healing and then purple over the top for extra protection

3. Even more powerful is a bubble of GOLDEN Light because it allows love and good things into your energy field and converts negative energy back into positive and returns it to the sender as positive energy.

4.Imagine yourself inside a dark blue cloak.
It totally surrounds you and comes down to the floor. Imagine wrapping it around yourself and zipping up the hood, so you are completely inside

5. You can imagine yourself with a shield around yourself. I imagine mine rising up or coming down to the music from Thunderbirds, so you are inside and you are protected from any negative. Yet you can still connect with people and are not closed off to them.You just do not take on any of their negative energies.

6.Crystals-
If you are working on your computer, set a piece of quartz on your computer. It will absorb a lot of the negative energies.

7.One of the most powerful crystal protectors is a dark brown stone called "Tigers Eye". It has a long history of protection going right back to ancient times. You can either carry it with you or imagine it as another layer of protection around you.

If you are using crystals, it is important to wash them first, preferably in salt water, let them dry in natural light and them charge them up with your intention, of what you would like them to do for you- whether it is healing or protection.

These are just a few ways to protect your energies. If you have worked so hard to be positive and in the flow, protect your energies and don't let others pull you down.

For your marriage to last many years, it is important that you show your love for one another on a regular basis.

That means daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly, taking a few minutes, even seconds, to put your spouse first on your priority list.

Daily:
- Spend at least 10 minutes a day focused on one another without the distraction of your kids, the TV, the phone, etc.

Protection From Ghosts
What does protection from ghosts mean? Do I need to protect myself from ghosts? If you are around an environment that you believe is inhabited by a negative ghost, and you are vulnerable to fear of ghosts, then you need to take precautions.

Negative ghosts will attach to those who are fearful, because fear is darkness. Ghosts, being in darkness, can sense this and thus know who they can over-power. If a ghost wishes to do harm to a person, they can do so only to those who are “spiritually drained” or “dry.” In other words, fear becomes the doorway to allow an entity to be able to bring harm. For those who are spiritually aware, protection from ghosts are not an issue for they do not fear them.

A ghostly attack may be manifested many ways in a weak person, such as being frightful, disoriented, weak; having feelings of negativity, thoughts of depression, thoughts of suicide or even ghost possession. Not all of these symptoms are indicative of negative ghosts being present, but have been noted as signs of negative ghostly presence from those who are vulnerable. Sexually perverse ghosts called incubus or succubus have also been experienced by some.

Protect From Ghosts – Negative Entities
The best way to not be vulnerable to ghost attacks is to be aware of who you are spiritually. In other words, being in touch with the inner spirit (who you really are) is the best way to be empowered. Meditation brings realization of one’s spirit, especially as detachment from the physical realm occurs. Spirit is love, life, truth and peace – fear has no place.
Spirit is light. Knowing that nothing can harm you (unless you believe it can - through fear) is very powerful. Being aware of your “oneness” with God and all that exists is the truth of who you are. This truth is light and power.

Some techniques of people to help overcome fear of ghosts and to become empowered include:
1) Calm yourself down and speak while breathing in,“I am…” (and breathe out) “relaxed.” Imagine yourself fearless, all-powerful in spirit and tell the ghost, “No. Leave now.”
2) Envision a holy figure standing with you. Absorb their energy and strength.
3) Imagine you are a light bulb and visualize the light filling you from your toes to your head and broadcasting into the room around you. This is your shield of light that vanquishes all darkness.
4) Prayer to your religious figure, guide, angel, etc asking for assistance, light and protection also reportedly works for some people.

Final thoughts on Ghost Protection
When we lose control of our minds and bodies due to sickness, sexual addictions, over-use of alcohol or drugs, we may open ourselves up to negative entities. If we are led outwardly by the physical world with no regard for our spirit, then we walk through life spiritually “dead.” Signs of this “deadness” include a life marked by anger, jealousy, greed, revenge, hatred, perverseness, pleasure, gain, etc. One can either choose to be filled with light (positiveness: truth, peace, joy, and love) or darkness (negativity: fear, condemnation, guilt, worry, hatred, anger, greed, etc). The choice is always an individual one to make.

Robbed, taken on terror ride


JOHOR BARU: It was a terror-filled morning for a retiree and his family. He was abducted and assaulted by several men. And then the culprits raided his home and tied up his wife and two children.

The robbers grabbed some money and jewellery and attempted to flee in the family car.

But one of them was caught in a high-speed chase that followed, with the police firing several warning shots at the Proton Perdana.

Another getaway car sped in a different direction, carrying Goo Tiam Chye, 69, in it.

He was later dumped at an undisclosed location.

The drama unfolded when Goo left his house in Taman Skudai Baru at 6.15am yesterday to buy newspapers.

Four men waylaid him and forced him into their car at knifepoint and demanded that he hand over the keys to his house.

When he refused, they hit him. The victim, whose son Sin Kok is the Gelang Patah MCA public complaints bureau deputy chief, then surrendered the keys.

The suspects drove him back to the house and while one of them held the victim in the car, three of them stormed into Goo’s house and tied up his wife, 60, and two of his children, both in their 20s.

They ransacked the house and grabbed about RM3,000 worth of cash, jewellery and mobile phones. The suspects then demanded the key to a Proton Perdana and as two of the suspects tried to drive the car out, a police patrol car arrived.

The four suspects, in two cars along with the retiree, sped off in different directions.

A high-speed chase ensued but within minutes, the Perdana’s anti-theft security system kicked in and the car stalled by the roadside.

Sin Kok said his father was injured on the leg and head and had been warded for observation.

State CID chief Senior Asst Comm Roslan Ahmad confirmed the arrest of a man in his 30s.

Common terms in wine



Acetic: Indicates an undesirable vinegary smell in the wine.

Bite: Portrays a powerful initial sensation of acidity or tannin, which grabs your attention once the wine is tasted.

Cat's pee: A pungent aroma found in some sauvignon blanc wines.

Dirty: Describes a wine with an unattractive smell, usually caused by hydrogen sulphide.

Extra sec: French term for extra dry. Mainly used in champagne, but it is actually a sweeter style than brut, or very dry.

Finish: Describes the final sensation left in the mouth once a wine is swallowed. A long, persistent finish is a sign of a fine wine.

Green: An uncomplimentary term indicating a lack of ripeness, particularly in red wine.

Hollow: Signifies that a wine lacks depth, particularly on the middle palate.

Legs: Describes the pattern formed when wine trickles down the inside of a glass after being swirled. "Good" or persistent legs indicate a high viscosity and are sometimes associated with a high alcoholic content.

Maderised: Suggests that a wine is too mature and oxidised, and has a cooked taste.

Nose: Indicates the aroma and bouquet of a wine.

Oxidised: Indicates that a wine is affected by contact with air. It results in the loss of fruitiness and freshness. White wines can also sometimes start to brown.

Petrolly: Signifies an oily smell in the wine. This is typical of fine, aged riesling.

Reduced: Refers to a wine that develops a dirty smell that is similar to rotten eggs.

Short: Signifies a wine that leaves very little aftertaste.

Tough: Describes a wine that has a harsh taste, usually the result of a high tannin content.

Vin de garde: French term for wine that is suitable for ageing.

Wood: Describes the flavours in wine derived from ageing in barrel. Not to be confused with "woody" which is used to describe unpleasant flavours derived from old or dirty barrels, or from stalks.
