Alaska island hit by powerful earthquake

A magnitude 6.5 earthquake rattled Alaska's Aleutian Islands in the northern Pacific on Wednesday, but did not immediately trigger a tsunami warning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The strong quake was detected at 1:04 p.m. local time southeast of Nikolaski, a village of 31 people about 1,500 kilometers southwest of Anchorage, with the epic center about 33 kilometers deep in the Pacific, the agency said.

The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center said the quake did not generate a tsunami and no warning or watch was put into effect.

On the 14th Dalai Lama's betrayal of Buddhism

Thursday's People's Daily (overseas edition) carried a signed article titled "Why does the "Buddhist leader" frequently violate dharma and break faith: on the 14th Dalai Lama's betrayal of Buddhism".

The basic criterion to distinguish pious Buddhists from bogus ones is "taking precepts as masters" and "abiding by precepts to practice Buddhadharma". dGe-lugs-pa Sect, the Yellow Sect of Lamaism, of the Tibetan Buddhism is even better known for its strict observance of those commandments. Master Tsongkha-pa wrote in his book, the Great Exposition on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment, that "the great achievers will be so only in name if they fail to fully follow Buddhist precepts and teachings". Though the commandments followed by Tibetan Buddhists vary, they are all based on the common ground of four precepts, namely no killing, stealing, adultery and lying. Monks would be seen as committing serious offenses if they betrayed one of the four precepts. However, the 14th Dalai Lama, a self-claimed "Buddhist leader", repeatedly broke the commandments and betrayed his faith by violating the precepts of no killing and lying.

Firstly, let's look at how he betrayed the precept of no killing. In the late 1950s, Tibetan reactionary leaders launched an armed rebellion in an attempt to permanently maintain the feudal serfdom and their autocratic rule. The 14th Dalai Lama was the chief representative of the feudal serfdom. The armed rebels set houses on fire, looted Tibetan people and raped women. What happened then still lingers in Tibetan people's minds today. In the late 1980s, the Dalai Lama clique stirred up unrest in Lhasa, which seriously harmed people's lives and damaged their property. Moreover, who was behind the mid 1970s assassination of Gung-thangTshul-khrims, one of the leaders of the Group 13, who failed to obey Dalai's orders? Who nodded to plot and implement the assassination of Li-thang A-thar? Who, in the late 1990s, sent killers to the home of Rin-po-che Kun-bde-gling and seriously wounded him? Who threatened to exterminate the "life and activities" of two young Rin-po-ches, Chi-jang and Sun-po? Vjigs-med Tshe-ring, who once was one of the key members of the Dalai Lama clique, said that at least ten Tibetans, who disagreed with the Dalai Lama, had been assassinated.

Secondly, let's have a look at how the 14th Dalai Lama violated the precept of no lying. The Dalai Lama sent a telegram in 1951 after the signing of the agreement on the peaceful liberation of Tibet, in which he said that the agreement, signed on May 23, 1951,was based on friendship and thus won unanimous support from the local government of Tibet, Tibetan monks and the people. But on March 10, 1961, the 14th Dalai Lama said in a speech that the agreement was written fully in the will of the "Red Han" and was signed by his representative, who was put under house arrest. In 1953, the 14th Dalai Lama wrote an article, saying that Tibetans were one of the ethnic communities in China, which enjoyed long and rich history and Tibetan people enjoyed freedom and equality as all the other ethnic groups did in China after they returned to the great family of the motherland. But on March 10, 1960, he said in another speech that Tibet has been "a completely independent country" with its own political system and government ever since the Tibetan people created their own written language.

In 1954, I accompanied the 14th Dalai Lama and the 10th Panchen Lama to Beijing. Till now, the zealous and respectful manner that the Dalai Lama demonstrated during that visit is still vivid in my mind. In the eulogy he presented to Chairman Mao Zedong in both Tibetan and Chinese, he extolled Chairman Mao as the "red sun", which "glorifies the whole nation, drives away invaders, and brings peace and blessing to people of all ethnic groups". However, when he fled abroad, he went back on his words and broke the precept of no lying by wantonly attacking and defaming his home country and calling on the so-called free world to unite to block the development of his own people and motherland.

It is known to all that in the early Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the Fifth Dalai Lama paid respects to Emperor Shunzhi and was conferred by the Emperor with honorific title. The title and position of Dalai Lama was also legalized by the central authorities during the visit. The move not only helped maintain the unification of China, but also boosted the social stability and economic development in Tibet. The Tibetan people, who were profoundly grateful to the Fifth Dalai Lama, commended him as "theGreat Fifth". It was shocking to many people that as a descendent of the Fifth Dalai Lama, the 14th Dalai Lama unabashedly attacked the Fifth Dalai Lama in May 1986 at a gathering of Tibetan people in the Netherlands, saying that it was shameful for the Fifth Dalai Lama to have "joyously accepted the mandarin jacket conferred by the Qing emperor." He also derided the Fifth Dalai Lama for paying respects to the central authorities, saying he had" lost face by setting up the relations." Those sayings were Dalai Lama's real thoughts, which also proved that he had totally betrayed his ancestors and his religion.

During the late 1980s and early 1990s, the 14th Dalai Lama believed that the dramatic changes in the former Soviet Union and east Europe brought new opportunities for "Tibet independence". In August 1991, he said in France and Switzerland that it would take no more than five or ten years for Tibet to be separated from China. In January 1992, he said again that Tibet would achieve independence in five or ten years. In 1995, it seemed that Dalai Lama gained more "magic power" even though his clique was low in morale. In March of the same year, he formally issued a prophecy, proclaiming that great changes would take place in China that year or in the following year. In August, he said in public that the "upcoming changes in 1995 or 1996" would benefit his group. As a matter of fact, Tibet did witness "great changes" in 1995. During that year, Tibetan people celebrated the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Tibet Autonomous Region, and most of the 62 key construction projects in Tibet financially supported by the whole nation were completed. Also in 1995, the divine reincarnation of Panchen Lama was successfully completed. The development of Tibet played a joke with the "magic power" of the 14th Dalai Lama, which, perhaps, is the judgment on Dalai Lama for his betrayal of the precept of no lying.

The spiritual essence of the tenets and canons of the Tibetan Buddhism include the basic essentials of observing the rules, sincerity, equilibrium, even share of wealth, altruism and harmony, which are also the basics of the healthy practice of Buddhism over the past 2,000 years and grounds for Buddhists to cultivate themselves through meditation and encourage people to do good. All Buddhists should follow the tenets to distinguish right from wrong on cardinal issues and make further progress in their religious accomplishment. However, the 14th Dalai Lama has been playing with the divine Buddhism to achieve political goals and purposely mislead the public, which fully demonstrates his hypocrisy in faith. By Shi Shan, the author is a research fellow in Tibetan Buddhism, who used to work in Tibet for a long time.

Singapore's "magic monkey" trees inspire cult, cynics

SINGAPORE (Reuters Life!) - Buddha sat for years under one to find enlightenment, and scientist Isaac Newton had his epiphany in another's shade. But for many Singaporeans, trees are useful for a more prosaic quest -- lucky lottery numbers.

The discovery of two "monkey heads" poking out of the bark of an otherwise non-descript African Mahogany tree have sparked a minor craze in the southeast Asian state, as devotees seek numbers from what they believe to be a god living in the tree.

Bananas, peanuts and peaches have been left as offerings to please the monkey god, sacred in Chinese mythology and Hinduism. A wheel-like device which kneeling gamblers turn by hand in front of the tree to spit out numbered balls has helped fuel the mania.

"Most people come for lottery numbers", explained Madam Kang, who had traveled half way across the island to join a crowd of a hundred onlookers milling around the tree on a weekend afternoon.

"There were three car accidents by the tree but no one was hurt, so people believe it was the monkey god protecting them."

Not long after the monkey god reportedly aided a series of wins, another three trees bearing gnarls that resemble gods were discovered along the same -- now jammed -- road.

Cartons of milk and more joss sticks garnish a small shrine set up in front of the elephant god Ganesha on a nearby tree, where a nobbly "elephant" head juts from the trunk.

Meters away, more onlookers snap images of a bark outline of the Chinese mercy goddess, Guan Yin, while others pat an oval bark eruption on another tree, ringed with garlands and said to be a tiger-dragon god tree.

SPIRIT PANTHEON
Despite the sacred trees' popularity, not all are convinced.

"The uneven bark surface at the base of the tree trunk is the result of callusing, a natural reaction in which the tree grows new bark over injured areas", a spokeswoman for the National Parks Board told the official Straits Times newspaper.

Other skeptics say the concept is simply too good to be true.

"If the tree can give money, most of the people in Singapore are not going to work. They'd just go to the tree and ask for the number," laughed taxi driver Mahmud Sanusi.

"After a few months maybe somebody will find a rock, with Mickey Mouse on it," said another taxi driver Chan Chee Siong.

But for others, sacred and lucky trees are a reality.

Bamboo and wooden "wishing trees", where devotees pray and hang written wishes, are found in several Chinese temples. And small shrines, nestled into the trunks of the roadside trees, are a common sight on this verdant island.

Henry Yap finds nothing strange about worshipping each week at a yellow-painted shrine set up in the roots of a massive banyan beside a shopping mall. "When you come here you set your mind free. It's what you call a holy place. It's very different from an indoors place," he explained.

For lucky tree-devotees, winning is believing. In February, 26-year-old Han Weili won $2,000 in the lottery with what he said were numbers gained from a lucky tree outside his housing block.

"I'd never won before" he said. "After I won I said thank you to the tree and bought it some food and some small flowers. I didn't buy anything with the money."

Despite local protests, estate renovations have now fenced off the tree. Devotees say the god "moved" to another sacred tree -- a 120-year-old, 30 meter (98 foot) tall Bodhi that towers over a temple, and which is now mobbed at weekends.

Volunteers at the temple, who believe the tree is Singapore's oldest and most sacred, are perplexed at its new fan base. But they can not stop them.

"No one can explain it. God appears in different forms to suit the culture," said temple volunteer Alice Chua.

"Being greedy is against our precepts, in Buddhism we don't encourage gambling. But we can't stop their luck if they do win."

Five ways to green

Five things you can buy

1. Compact fluorescent lightbulbs
These energy-efficient bulbs cost less than $4 and are produced by major corporations like GE. If every household in America switched five regular light bulbs for five fluorescent bulbs, it would be the equivalent of taking 1 million cars off the highways for a full year.

2. Outdoor solar lighting
These yard or patio lights cost less than $20, and they don't burn any electricity or produce any CO2.

3. Programmable thermostats
Though these thermostats cost from $50 to $100, they can actually cut your heating and cooling costs. Set the setting so it's a little bit cooler in the winter and warmer in the summer when you're not in the house. A difference of 2 degrees can reduce a home's CO2 emissions by up to 9 percent over the course of a year.

4. Air filters
Changing the air filters in your heating and cooling systems regularly can knock 2 percent off of your CO2 output each year.

5. Electric water heater blanket
Water heaters use a lot of energy and generate a lot of CO2. A blanket costs less than $18 and can cut your home's CO2 emissions by almost 4½ percent.

Keep green in mind!

Food and medicines from China put on highest alert

BATU PAHAT: Food and pharmaceutical products from China have been put on the highest alert after some of them were detected with harmful elements and violated specifications.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said these products had been placed on 'level five' of the imported foods monitoring scale - the highest.
Under this, all categories of food including herbal products and health supplements must be tested before they are allowed to enter the country.

Pharmaceutical products from China must also be registered with the Health Ministry and brought in under license.

Dr Chua said the foods products would be tested for pesticides, antibiotics, heavy metals and other substances that could negatively affect health.

He said imports from China would only be allowed into the country if they were safe to be consumed, otherwise, they would be destroyed or returned.

“With all the tests and requirements, we can assure that all products in the market are safe,” he said after attending the launching and ground breaking ceremony for an upgrading project of Batu Pahat hospital Monday.

Dr Chua said in the first seven months of the year, a total of 217 pharmaceutical products were found to not have followed specifications set by the ministry in the first seven months of the year.

He said warnings and other actions including revocation of licenses and cancellations of registrations had been taken against the offenders, adding that 18 types of food were brought in violation of the Food Act 1983.

The products included honey (blended and sunflower), red dates, seaweed, preserved fruits and salted vegetables and preserved salted radish, which contained chloramphenicol, heavy metals and benzoic acid.

Worms Found In Some Chinese Chocolates

The chocolates are actually counterfeits of a popular international brand.
The worms found inside of them are the larvae of a common moth.

Though some other consumers also found worms in chocolate made by a local Korean company, the greater fear is that the Chinese-made chocolates will add to the controversy over products made in China.

U.S. anti-gay marriage senator admits misconduct in homosexual

U.S. Senator Larry E. Craig, a firm gay marriage opponent, was arrested in June at an airport's men's bathroom and has pleaded guilty to misconduct, The New York Times reported Tuesday.

Craig, 62, has been fined more than 500 U.S. dollars and placed on unsupervised probation for a year, according to the report.

A 10-day jail sentence was suspended, according to a copy of a court document in the case. A second charge, interference with privacy, was dismissed.

According to a police report, a plainclothes police officer investigating complaints of sexual activity in the bathroom at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport arrested the senator on June 11 after what the officer described as sexual advances made by Craig from an adjoining stall.

In the wake of the homosexual scandal, Craig also severed ties with the Republican presidential campaign of Mitt Romney.

The Idaho Republican is a father of three and voted against gay rights. In 2006, he moved to endorse an amendment to the Constitution to define marriage in the United States as a union between one man and one woman.

Craig, whose seat is up for election next year, is the second Republican senator in recent weeks to find his personal behavior under scrutiny.

Senator David Vitter was implicated in a separate case when his phone number turned up in the records of an escort service that the authorities have described as a prostitution ring.

10 ways to cyberslack

Employees all over the world spend up to a fifth of their working day cyberslacking, or wasting time on the Internet, studies show.

Here are 10 ways cyberslackers can pass the time at work. (Warning: Your workplace may prohibit access to the sites)

1. Network:
Facebook (http://www.facebook.com) is popular with students and business professionals. MySpace (http://www.myspace.com) uses more graphics and video. Companies, bands and celebrities often use the site to promote themselves.

2. Rant about work:
Rant about fellow employees on the Annoying Coworker site (http://www.annoyingcoworker.net). Are customers getting you down? Try Customers Suck (http://customerssuck.livejournal.com).

3. Going once...:
Buy or bid for rare things not usually found in shops. Score vintage clothes, old music records or even that sword from the Lord of the Rings movies you've been eyeing on Ebay (http://www.ebay.com).

4. Judge beauty contests:
Rate people (http://www.hotornot.com), animals (http://www.ratemypuppy.com) or rooms -- even college dorms (http://ratemyspace.hgtv.com). Let puppies (http://puppywar.com) and kittens (http://kittenwar.com) battle it out for cuteness.

5. Catch up on celebrity gossip:
It may be superficial, but it sure is fun. Read about celebrities' latest exploits at The Superficial (http://www.thesuperficial.com) or Oh No They Didn't (http://ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com).

6. Write in a personal blog:
Post stories, rants and pictures on your own online journal. Popular hosts include Blogger (http://www.blogger.com) and Livejournal (http://www.livejournal.com). You can also link to your friends' journals and exchange comments on separate posts.

7. Put a story behind the face:
Read what it's like to be a waiter (http://www.waiterrant.net) and you may end up tipping better. Or read about the life of a coffee barista (http://baristabrat.blogspot.com), a New York City taxi driver (http://newyorkhack.blogspot.com) or a London subway station supervisor (http://lifeonthetube.blogspot.com).

8. All work and no play
Turn the sound down on your computer if people are around
and play online card, arcade or word games at Yahoo! (http://games.yahoo.com) or MSN (http://games.msn.com).

9. Run your own sports team:
Sports fans can manage their own virtual team in a fantasy league (http://fantasysports.yahoo.com).

10. I'm no slacker:
Keep your cyberslacking secret. If you are using Windows, push the Windows button and M to minimise your programs. Or toggle from the site where you are cyberslacking to Don's Boss Page (http://www.donsbosspage.com), which displays a fake spreadsheet to fool your supervisor.

REUTERS

Don't let your boss catch you reading this

JERUSALEM, Aug 29 (Reuters) - If you are at work, chances are you are probably doing it right now.

Walk into any large office, and you will most likely hear the telltale computer bleeps of chat programs and online games, accompanied by furious mouse-clicking. Employees may seem busy, but many are wasting time on the Internet, or "cyberslacking".

Studies worldwide suggest employees spend about a fifth of their work shifts engaging in personal activities. Their favourite time waster? The Internet.

Patricia Wallace, author of the 2004 book "The Internet in the Workplace: How New Technology Is Transforming Work", said employees have always found ways to avoid working too hard.

"The issue is now you have something that seems to be genuinely irresistible because it's such a gateway to the whole planet that's right there on your desk and easily concealed to people passing by," said Wallace, a professor at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Employees who cyberslack have been shown to spend most of their time emailing, and almost a third of their messages were not related to work, said James Philips, a psychology professor at Australia's Monash University.

Many workers manage finances or shop online. Popular social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace are also common cyberslacking destinations. It is not uncommon to see a user write on his "status" report that he or she is "at work".

Some companies, which spend millions on Web access, have fired workers for cyberslacking, citing concerns about inappropriate activities. But hiding it has become easier -- people can access the Internet through cellphones, for instance.

Films and television shows have been focusing on the phenomenon.

Time-wasting at work was spoofed in the 1999 cult film "Office Space," while "The Office", a British TV comedy that now has a U.S. version, has shown characters playing a computer war game as part of what they described as a team-building exercise.

"YOU EAT LIKE A PIG!"

Walter Block, a professor of economics at Loyola University in New Orleans, pointed to similarities between employees who slacked off before the computer age and those who waste time in cyberspace.

"I think they do it for the same reason they did it before -- some people, because they're cheating their boss, other people, because it helps them work," Block said.

Office-dedicated Web sites have been popping up.

Workers can go to www.overheardintheoffice.com to post and rate humorous quotes overheard at their workplaces. They can rant about office colleagues and bosses at www.annoyingcoworker.com -- and email them anonymous messages through the Web site.

"UGH! You eat like a pig!" one person wrote. "Stop smacking your lips and licking your fingers and snorting while you eat chips two feet away from me! It's like feeding time at the zoo!"

A recent survey by online compensation firm Salary.com showed about six out of 10 employees in the United States acknowledged wasting time at work.

About 34 percent listed personal Internet use as the leading time-wasting activity in the workplace. Employees said they did so because they were bored, worked too many hours, were underpaid or were unchallenged at work.

Firms all over the world are concerned about potentially harmful effects of surfing they deem to be inappropriate may have on their company's image. Many firms use computer software to monitor Web activity and block certain sites or servers.

Almost a fifth of those surveyed in a 2006 Israeli-American poll said they accessed online sex sites at work.

U.S.-based electronics firm IBM once fired an employee for visiting an adult chat room at work. Last year, a New York City employee was sacked by Mayor Michael Bloomberg for having a card game on his computer screen.

Some experts say private Internet use at work does not affect productivity and could even be beneficial.

"The so-called cyberslacking could be online shopping or arranging for your dog-sitter online or taking care of banking so you don't have to take a two-hour lunch," Wallace said. "In cases like that, you're actually helping employees save time".

Protection From Ghosts

Protection From Ghosts
What does protection from ghosts mean? Do I need to protect myself from ghosts? If you are around an environment that you believe is inhabited by a negative ghost, and you are vulnerable to fear of ghosts, then you need to take precautions.

Negative ghosts will attach to those who are fearful, because fear is darkness. Ghosts, being in darkness, can sense this and thus know who they can over-power. If a ghost wishes to do harm to a person, they can do so only to those who are “spiritually drained” or “dry.” In other words, fear becomes the doorway to allow an entity to be able to bring harm. For those who are spiritually aware, protection from ghosts are not an issue for they do not fear them.

A ghostly attack may be manifested many ways in a weak person, such as being frightful, disoriented, weak; having feelings of negativity, thoughts of depression, thoughts of suicide or even ghost possession. Not all of these symptoms are indicative of negative ghosts being present, but have been noted as signs of negative ghostly presence from those who are vulnerable. Sexually perverse ghosts called incubus or succubus have also been experienced by some.

Protect From Ghosts – Negative Entities
The best way to not be vulnerable to ghost attacks is to be aware of who you are spiritually. In other words, being in touch with the inner spirit (who you really are) is the best way to be empowered. Meditation brings realization of one’s spirit, especially as detachment from the physical realm occurs. Spirit is love, life, truth and peace – fear has no place.
Spirit is light. Knowing that nothing can harm you (unless you believe it can - through fear) is very powerful. Being aware of your “oneness” with God and all that exists is the truth of who you are. This truth is light and power.

Some techniques of people to help overcome fear of ghosts and to become empowered include:
1) Calm yourself down and speak while breathing in,“I am…” (and breathe out) “relaxed.” Imagine yourself fearless, all-powerful in spirit and tell the ghost, “No. Leave now.”
2) Envision a holy figure standing with you. Absorb their energy and strength.
3) Imagine you are a light bulb and visualize the light filling you from your toes to your head and broadcasting into the room around you. This is your shield of light that vanquishes all darkness.
4) Prayer to your religious figure, guide, angel, etc asking for assistance, light and protection also reportedly works for some people.

Final thoughts on Ghost Protection
When we lose control of our minds and bodies due to sickness, sexual addictions, over-use of alcohol or drugs, we may open ourselves up to negative entities. If we are led outwardly by the physical world with no regard for our spirit, then we walk through life spiritually “dead.” Signs of this “deadness” include a life marked by anger, jealousy, greed, revenge, hatred, perverseness, pleasure, gain, etc. One can either choose to be filled with light (positiveness: truth, peace, joy, and love) or darkness (negativity: fear, condemnation, guilt, worry, hatred, anger, greed, etc). The choice is always an individual one to make.

"I respectfully ask that the media allow me to receive care and heal in private during this difficult time," Wilson said in a statement released by his representative to celebrity website TMZ.com.

A spokeswoman at Cedars Sinai said Wilson was in a "good condition."

There was no official word on the reasons for Wilson's hospitalization however reports said the actor had attempted suicide.

Vast new casino raises the stakes in Macau

A gondola is moored indoors at "St Marks Square" at the Venetian Resort in Macau. The Venetian Macao, the world's biggest casino by gaming tables, opens to the public on Tuesday. - AFP

The outside of the Venetian Resort in Macau.

MACAU : The Venetian Macao, the world's biggest casino by gaming tables, opens to the public on Tuesday in an attempt to trump its rivals not only as a gambling paradise but an entertainment centre.

The 2.4 billion-dollar resort, built entirely on a reclaimed land called the Cotai Strip, mirrors the Venetian casino complex in Las Vegas -- complete with replicas of Venice's famous canals and romantic architecture.

The ambitious project boasts a fleet of gondolas and includes a copy of Venice's Bridge of Sighs and of St Mark's Square, which has a ceiling of a fake blue sky with white clouds.

The mega resort will feature 850 gaming tables and 4,100 slot machines on floors as big as three football pitches.

With 3,000 hotel rooms, a theatre, a 15,000-seat stadium and 350 shops, the complex aims to turn the tiny territory of 520,000 people from a purely gambling venue to a true entertainment destination.

"It cannot help but be a success," Sheldon Adelson, chief executive of Las Vegas Sands, operator of the Venetian Macao, told AFP in an interview Monday.

"We run a hotel at Las Vegas at 100 percent occupancy, we know why it works, why we have the best employees and we are copying the business model of the most successful hotel in history.

"There is no doubt in my mind whatsoever," he said. After Macau liberalised its monopolistic gaming market once dominated by local tycoon Stanley Ho, Sands opened the first major US casino in the southern Chinese territory in 2004 and paid for its investment in 12 months.

Now, Adelson said he hopes to make back the 2.4 billion-dollar investment in the Venetian, the second-largest building in the world, within five years.

Analysts said Adelson's bet on the cut-throat gaming competition could pay off, although they believe the Venetian may not draw all the customers away in a market that VIP baccarat accounts for two-thirds of the gaming revenues.

"Some casinos have been here for ages and they have their own loyal VIP customers. They won't switch because of a new casino," said Fong Ka-chio, director of the Institute for the Study of Commercial Gaming in Macau.

"Operators will find a way to retain their customers. It's very unlikely that the Venetian will take away all the business," he said.

But Adelson has his tricks to lure visitors to stay longer than the average stay of 1.2 days -- by offering them convention facilities and getting them to watch shows, and to shop and enjoy fine-dining, rather than just gambling.

The Venetian aims to become a world-leading convention destination with its huge exhibition space and has already booked 44 events at the centre over the next two years.

Like Las Vegas, the resort will also host shows to draw more customers with its 1,800-seat theatre, which will be home to the renowned Cirque de Soleil.

The Venetian also hopes its shops, to be occupied by luxury brands like Tiffany and Versace, will attract wealthy Chinese, among whom analysts expect demand for luxury goods to grow 20 percent per year.

"Macau is such a small place. There's a limit on how many tourists we can take. If you have limited capacity, would they want to attract people who would spend 1,000 dollars or 100 dollars?" Fong said. "I believe they aim to attract more rich people who will be willing to spend not just on gambling but on shows and shops. I think that would be a trend," he added. - AFP/ir

Total Lunar Eclipse: August 28, 2007

Path of the Moon through Earth's umbral and penumbral shadows during the Total Lunar Eclipse of Aug. 28, 2007. (Pacific Daylight Time)

A total eclipse of the Moon occurs during the early morning of Tuesday, August 28, 2007. The event is widely visible from the United States and Canada as well as South America, the Pacific Ocean, western Asia and Australia. During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon's disk can take on a dramatically colorful appearance from bright orange to blood red to dark brown and (rarely) very dark gray.

An eclipse of the Moon can only take place at Full Moon, and only if the Moon passes through some portion of Earth's shadow. The shadow is actually composed of two cone-shaped parts, one nested inside the other. The outer shadow or penumbra is a zone where Earth blocks some (but not all) of the Sun's rays. In contrast, the inner shadow or umbra is a region where Earth blocks all direct sunlight from reaching the Moon.

If only part of the Moon passes through the umbra, a partial eclipse is seen. However, if the entire Moon passes through the umbral shadow, then a total eclipse of the Moon occurs.
